The town of Laclo, east of Dili, lies some 500 metres from a reliable water supply. Before this project, women and children carried water by hand from the river up to the village. After the project was successfully completed, a solar-powered pumping system was delivering 45,000 litres of water a day to a large tank uphill of the town, providing ample supply at useful pressures without ongoing fuel and maintenance costs. |

The Maldives were devastated by the tsunami on Boxing Day, 2004. This disaster, along with poor existing sewerage systems, meant that water contamination was rife and islanders had to buy expensive imported bottled water. Solco installed a solar pumping system with integrated purification on the island of Kulhudhuffushi. This allowed for the establishment of a local business selling bottled water at half the price. |
